   Getting started

   Before you start

   • Not teaching yet? Ada is glad to talk with you and help you on your way. Get in touch, whatever stage you are at.
   • No Quiltworx classes in your shop yet? Ada is glad to talk with you and help you on your way. Get in touch, whatever stage you are at.
   • Ask yourself: why do you want to teach? Do you enjoy being with people, and are you curious about what your students can teach you? Do you have a business plan, and what do you expect of yourself once you are certified? Who do you want to teach for, how far are you willing to travel, and what income do you expect or need? Teaching also means arriving early to set up and staying until the room is spotless.
   • Have an active Facebook account.
   • Have a webshop and a published workshop programme.Why: Technique of the Month courses can bring you students from much further away, even from abroad. They need to be able to find your shop online and see what you offer.
   • Publish your lesson programme on your own website or Facebook page. A webshop is not required.

   Mostly before the training

   Build your portfolio

   • Make at least 2 different Quiltworx quilts, quilted, bound and labelled, chosen together with Ada. Projects that are not quilts, such as table runners or placemats, don’t count towards these two, and neither does the Technique of the Month. Why: finished quilts show your students and customers that you know these patterns inside out, and that you love Quiltworx yourself.
   • Your portfolio also needs to show each of the eight Quiltworx techniques, such as Flying Geese in circles and New York Beauty. Your two quilts will probably cover several of them. You can show the rest with smaller projects, such as a table runner or placemats. See the eight techniques and example projects
   • Host at least 3 workshop days in your shop with an existing Certified Instructor. The days don’t have to be consecutive.Why: a Certified Instructor gets your customers excited about Quiltworx and brings the kind of expertise Judy Niemeyer would bring to your shop herself.
   • Gain teaching experience with the many Quiltworx patterns that don’t need a certificate. They also give you the start of a class programme. Visit shows and exhibitions, and give demonstrations and classes. What to cover in your classes

   Along the way

   Check in with Ada

   • You can ask Ada for advice at any point. Your portfolio doesn’t need to be complete before you register for a certification training: you can finish the last pieces afterwards.
   • Ada decides when your portfolio is ready. Show her your finished quilts and projects. Once she has approved them and you meet the other requirements, you receive your certification.

   Only at the 9-day Specials — dates are in the retreat programme

   Certification training

   • Join one of Ada’s 9-day Specials. This is where you work towards the certificate for the current Technique of the Month, and where you practise teaching a group.
   • During the training you start on the current Technique of the Month quilt in Queen size. You can finish it at home. Once it is quilted, bound and labelled, show it to Ada: you need the finished quilt for your certificate.
   • The shop owner is the one who gets certified, so the owner takes part in the training.
   • Would you like to teach earlier Techniques of the Month as well? Join a 9-day Special and make a Technique of the Month of your choice.

   After training

   You’re certified

   • You are listed on the European Certified Shops or Certified Instructors page on Quiltworx.com.
   • What you get:
     • Wholesale purchasing through Quiltworx
     • Access to the Quiltworx Slack channel for company and product news
     • Up to 8 free patterns a year, if you meet the minimum programme requirements
     • 25% off digitised quilting designs
   • You may teach the Technique of the Month quilts you are certified for. The patterns are only sold together with a course or retreat, never on their own.

   Every year

   Staying certified

   • Teach at least 12 days a year.
   • Keep your events calendar and profile on Quiltworx.com up to date.
   • Use the Quiltworx Slack channel and Dropbox for all communication.

   • Annual certification fee

     US$475 (US$450 if your events calendar was kept up all year)

     Quiltster account

     US$99 a year

   Every two years

   New Technique of the Month

   • Every two years Quiltworx introduces a new Technique of the Month. Come back to make its Queen cover quilt with Ada, and add its certificate to your collection.
   • You may skip one Technique of the Month. If you miss two in a row, you lose all your certificates, and with them your certification.
